The idea for Black Tap Brewing Company stemmed from a simple typeface design assignment. I chose to create Milo, a thin slab serif font that could be paired with a variety of other typefaces, including the cursive font I chose for this project. I approached this project with the hope of referencing elements of the Art Deco style, both in the line work as well as in the brand colors.
One of the biggest challenges I faced with this project was creating three separate bottle labels that were able to be easily differentiated, while also still appearing to belong together. This is where I expanded my original black and gold color scheme to also include the blue and silver colors. In addition to the Art Deco look that I created, one of my favorite aspects of this design is my reference to Rockford and other surrounding areas; the names Ironworks, Screw City, and Old Stone all acknowledge this area’s historic and industrial past, showing the pride that Black Tap takes in being a local brewing company.
